Well, since it has been about a year since I've posted anything on this, I decided to update!?...
I went and got my textbooks for university a few days ago, so naturally, I started browsing through a few of the ones not sealed tight in shrink wrap with the foreboding message "NON-RETURNABLE IF OPENED" (And since I'm still scared, having not experienced post-secondary yet, yeah right I'm going to open them). Anyways, I was reading a bit of my one used (yey!) psychology textbook. The beginning sounded to me like a whole let's get the world because psychology rules and everyone who studies it is a CRITICAL THINKER!! Seriously, I understand the necessity behind 'critical thinking' but when my teachers in high school would preach about it, that's one thing. They have thoughts. Books, however much I hate to admit this, do not. It's freaky when your grade twelve english teacher sounds as though she got her daily material from these textbooks. I do not appreciate it. I thought I escaped her a semester ago... I WAS HAPPY! And now, I have to read this thing every so often for a required class to get my degree. I was so looking forward to university... more so for the experience of it, but now? I'm not so sure. It kind of makes me worry that I'm going to have the same struggle I had with my essays last year (which by the way of all my english essays I passed last year the total came to ... two out of about...seven or eight).
I was trying to go to sleep last night (as we humans tend to do), and I couldn't sleep. All I could hear ringing in my brain was...critical thinking...logic...believing things you don't witness your self is NOT critical thinking...be a critical thinker! USE YOUR LOGIC!! Seriously? Fuck that. If I, for once in my life, feel like believing in something just because I frickin' feel like it? GOOD FOR ME! I'll do that and I'll be happy about it. You don't have to worry about what I think because if I think UFOs are real, well then damnit I think they're real. You don't have to...but I do (I don't actually believe in them, I think it's a possibility; however, that is the example the text use and I found it appropriate to rant about so).
Don't get me wrong though. I do support the message behind what they are trying to say. I fully agree that much of our society today have become mindless media followers who basically believe everything they hear. Where's the skepticism?! I don't know. Not a lot of people question any more. "Today we discovered that when you mix grass with flowers you get a pony!" "Oh wow, isn't that neat?" Sorry, I suppose that is a question.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that if one more person tells me to think critically I'll just ask them why should I have to? Then back up my opinion with, I believe you are trying to brainwash me into a cult, with all your critical thinking. Logical? No. But that's what I like about it.
